Title of Activity: How Rocks Are Formed

Brief Description of Activity:
Students will go to a website, in which they will learn how different rocks including: sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks, are formed. After learning about each type of rock, students will complete a quiz on the different characteristics of each rock. The website the students will use is http://www.fi.edu/fellows/fellow1/oct98/create/index.html. From this website, the students can use the links to search information about rocks throughout the website. After the students have completed the quiz, students can check their answers and move on to the next rock quiz.
General Learning Outcome:
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of materials that comprise Earth’s crust, and demonstrate skill in classifying these materials.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
- Students will identify various types of rock and compare similarities and differences.
- Students will describe the properties of each rock including: how the rock is formed, colour, luster, texture, hardness.
- Students will learn the different types of rock that fall into the categories of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
ICT Outcomes:
C.7.4.1 Use appropriate strategies to locate information to meet personal needs
P.2.1.1 Read information from a prepared database
C.1.1.1 access and retrieve appropriate information form electronic sources for specific inquiry

Rationale for Computer Integration:
Within this assignment, I have chosen to integrate the use computers to allow students to explore the Internet for educational resources. Teaching students the importance of using different search engines for educational purposes is important to expanding their knowledge of information technology in the classroom. This lesson also allows students to see the different resources that can be utilized to help one learn and assess one’s own learning.
